Opening the heart and lengthening the spine,是這個星期Alex最後一節課,來了快四十人,比昨天快多上一倍,但像小雯及傑比卻是第一次上他的課,這樣的同學可能也不少。課程的內容敘述是「This workshop seeks to explore elements of softness and grace in the midst of challenges and oppositions. Many experienced practitioners may become stuck with certain postures for years and now see 'improvement'. This class is catered to those with minimum two years' experience.」
Opening the heart and lengthening the spine,在新加坡舉辦Workshop時同學的反應都很好,因此將以同樣的方式進行。
他說瑜珈其實是很精緻的,有的時候我們太執著fix在physical的動作上,或是很強調Mula Bandha,亦或是how to do the alignment,而顯得過於僵化,其實體位法的練習只是一個step to explore something else的基礎而已,不要想從outside waken inside,而是應該相反的由內而外inside waken outside,他說我們要open the heart, open the grace,不要以為瑜珈是all kind of fancy posture,但如果我們的心無法打開,那就完全沒有作用了。他說我們有時trying too hard,但這樣yoga並不會發生not got things right,所以我們該step back。
因此所有的體位法都是reference posture,最重要的是自己身體的感覺,我們只是藉由練習explore to find out ourselves,他要我們pay more attention in emotion,讓physical stable,注意心中的想法與變化,become steady yoga。
這樣就是balance,所以要breath properly,draw our awareness in,如果是用right way練習,我們都具有無限的潛力。
他要坐著的人用關愛的方式care同伴,let them feel relax,”You see them. You feel them. You hear them.”
Alex說去嘗試trying是很重要的,不要急著去作動作,先把身體心靈都放軟,要從inside out而不要outside in,他說relax是很重要的,hold is good enough,只是一個認識自己身體的方式,要accept。 所以Alex要我們work it slowly,Ashtanga固定的動作系統能soft the spine,treat each posture respect,不是我們自己想要怎樣,他說”Perfect is hard, can do ourselves.”
You have a very beautiful practice, please keep practice it.”
我請他在我的筆記本上留一些話,Alex寫著「Dear Lucy, Always stand tall in who you are. Be proud of humble and allow the roots at your legs ground you solidly into the earth, there your body can stretch up tall and always embrace the beauty of the Divine all around. Live it. Be it. Feel it. Alex」

The Sanskrit Language/R. Alexander Medin
What is language? What is its purpose? How does it communicate? What are the challenges and difficulties it faces? What is the role of grammar and phonetics? How do they originate? What are the basic fundamental sounds? How do the vocal chords produce them and how does one organize and arrange these sounds in a systematic manner?
Language is not something we normally think about. It is an extension of our cultural environment where we learn to voice our opinions, thoughts and emotions in a common medium of expressions. Normally we learn our alphabets, our grammars and native languages from early childhood. So rarely do we investigate into the questions mentioned above. Language is an expression of who we are, but the science of language itself is rarely investigated into, it is rather a denomination we learn to accept in order to better communicate with others. However the questions referred to above were analyzed in great details by the codifiers of the Sanskrit language and those who have the patience to study it a little will soon come to realize the profundity of this language.
In the early 19th Century there was a great fascination with the Orient, its culture, ritual and languages. Early travelers returned to Europe and spoke about an enchanted language uttered by priest in their rituals and spoken by the educated elite. Soon Modern Scholarship with their best linguist tried to understand and analyzes this language and was baffled with the complexity, order and the sense of refinement they came across. Professor Friedrich Schlegel, writer and critic, whose brother held the first chair of Indology in Bonn, Germany, said:
Justly it is called Sanskrit, that is 'perfect, finished'. Sanskrit combines these various qualities possessed separately by other tongues: Grecian copiousness, deep-tone Roman force, the divine afflatus characterizing the Hebrew tongues. Judged by an organic standard of the principals of language, Sanskrit excels in grammatical structure and is indeed the most perfectly developed of all idioms, not excepting Greek and Latin.
But this is only one aspect of the discovery. A language derives its value not merely from its logical and grammatical structure, but from the manner in which it has been used and the richness of its literature. Whether we look at the simple, unsophisticated folk style found in fable books like Panchatantra and Hitopadesha, or the short aphorisms, sutras found in the Shastras (authorities on philosophies) and expanded upon in their commentaries (bhasyas), it may be poetry of sophisticated thought for a trained audience well versed in the various sciences or the thousands of proverbs existing, we may study the great epics like the Mahabarata and the Ramayana that is a world in themselves, or the crest jewel of all philosophies found in the Upanishads - whatever study you take up you can be certain that the Sanskrit language is a treasure house full of great gems and jewels.
W.C. Taylor and early American Indologist expressed his fondness of the language and its literature when he pointed out it was not just the question of phenomenal quantity and variety, but also of the highest quality:
It was an astounding discovery that Hindustan possessed, in spite of changes of realms and changes of time, a language of unrivalled richness and variety….a philosophy compared with which, in point of the age, the lessons of Phytagoras are but of yesterday, and in point of daring speculation, Plato's boldest efforts were tame and commonplace. This literature, with all its colossal proportions - which can scarcely be described without the semblance of bombast exaggeration - claimed, of course, a place for itself. It stood alone and it was able to stand alone.
It was therefore not without reason the well-known historian Will Durant, while writing about India and Sanskrit affirms:
India was the Motherland of our race and Sanskrit the mother of Europe's languages; she was the mother of our philosophy, mother through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics; mother through the Buddha, of the ideals embodies in Christianity; mother through the village community of self government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all.
In a certain sense all language is an attempt to find the perfect unity of the word, the sound and all meaning. And perhaps this has never been achieved as perfectly and harmoniously as in the Sanskrit language. Sanskrit is rich in every way - rich in vocabulary, rich in literature, rich in thoughts and ideas, rich in meaning and values. The greatness, magnificence and beauty of Sanskrit has perhaps not been described better than by Sri Aurobindo, the great Rishi and Yogi of modern India:
The ancient and the classical creation of the Sanskrit tongue, both in quality and in body and abundance of excellence, in their potent originality and force and beauty, in their substance and art and structure, in grandeur and justice and charm of speech, and in the height and width of their spirit stand very evidently in the front rank among the world's great literatures. The language itself as has been universally recognized by those competent to form a judgment, it is one of the most magnificent, the most perfect and wonderfully sufficient literary instruments developed by the human mind; at once majestic and sweet and flexible, strong and clearly formed and full and vibrant and subtle….
The study of any of the Sanskrit sciences or philosophies can be a lifetime study in itself. Those who know a little of Sanskrit are well aware of how time consuming it may be to come to know a little bit, but those who have studied it for a lifetime are fully aware of how little they actually know. The Sanskrit language with all its diversity of beliefs, expression, culture, history, religion, philosophy and refined level of thought is like an ocean - deep, all-encompassing and with a new horizon always to be explored. So the great pundits of this language did not try to cover everything, they knew that was impossible, so the tradition supported specialization of one subject rather than an overview of all. Perhaps this is why the language has refused to die out over the millenniums. The very thesis of the language is to refine, Samskrta means that which is made perfect; the particular subject of interest you give your full attention to and of course, the mind that engages with it. As they were refined, the Sanskrit language became refined and of course, those that had the patience to receive it.
Unfortunately many people are of the opinion that Sanskrit is a dead language. This is far from the case. Today here in India there are books, magazines, journals and newspapers all written in Sanskrit and published on a daily and weekly basis. Some people are of the opinion that Sanskrit is only the archaic language of the Vedas and soul property of the priests and spiritual aspirants of this country. It is indeed through that it is the most ancient language of the world and was previously called Devavaani or Devabhaasa, the language of the gods. However the very foundation of the language seeks to give justice to eternal relation between speech/sound and meaning. This can often be conventional, but the Sanskrit language tries to understand the universality of sound/ vibration. It may manifest from within, from without or all around, but when there is a correspondence between the two, a harmony of expression will issue forth.
Dr. Sampadanna Mishra and Vijay have dedicated much research to this particular subject. For further interest I would suggest their book 'The wonder that is Sanskrit' In conclusion I would therefore like to refer to how they define language and the greatness of Sanskrit:
The greatness of any language depends on how perfectly it can communicate and arouse in the listener the exact experience of the speaker. It has to encompass the infinite variety of richness of life, its moods its depths and its heights and reflect them like a perfect mirror, without any distortion. This is indeed a difficult and challenging task. It demands the capacity to harmonize contradictory qualities. The language must be subtle and flexible, capable of subtle shades and nuances, and yet efficacious, clear, precise and unambiguous. It must be compact and succinct, as well as rich and opulent; concise yet suggestive, strong and powerful yet sweet and charming, capable of growth and expansion to meet new challenges of the future, and at the same time an inspiring repository of all the great achievements of the past. An impossible demand, one would say. But Sanskrit has met this challenge so beautifully that it is even known as 'Sanskrit' - that which have been well structured and refined to the utmost.
For anybody who desires to take up the study of this language may find it incredibly tedious, but then again a refinement of ones mind, intellect and all the sense organs was never meant to be easy. But for those that do, they are given an opportunity to find greater clarity and expression of ones being through the knowledge of sound.

P641 The Sanskrit language/Alex (75min)
課程的敘述「Come learn the basics of the Sanskrit language as we focus on the recitation of the yoga sutras of Patanjali and some simple prayers for well-being and greater peace.」
“It’s a beautiful language.” 但他還是簡短的介紹了梵文的歷史,這種ancient language具有spiritual teaching的功能,原本只是口耳相傳,到100年前才有正式的文字記錄,代表了whole tradition in India, text been written huge like ocean,但學習梵文最重要的意義是能了解reality of truth-who am I? 因此要我們taste the language, according to sound去了解what it is,他說梵文有很多發音是因為呼吸的方法而來的,因此不是單靠喉嚨發音,是一種自然而特別的方式,the placement of mouse嘴形很重要。他要我們hear the beauty of the sound,他也坦承accurate the sound is not easy,但既然文字形式是在千年之後才有的,listen比去看文字更為重要,他只是先作一次introduction of it。
不過這些梵文的意義卻很有趣,可以了解其想教化人們的意涵,包括body belong to God, we are only live in it,或是when we eat, we become inner fire,就像Alex說的,我們能因此understand the intension of the language。大多數的文字意義都有bring about peace and inside stable,或是the moment we let it go. We can’t control, let it free等。他說我們唸的時候can be like little sleep to sound,不需要執著proper sound,只要make it clear, then bring it out,他說這種文字能give us knowledge,讓我們no fear, let our ego set back,Alex要我們用奉獻的心情與感覺誠心的來唸這些梵咒。

P640 Letting go and breathing a new life force into your practice/Alex (180min)
這節課是另外收費的Workshop,看題目「Letting go and breathing a new life force into your practice」,內容說明「This workshop will investigate patterns of the breath and how we may get stiffer if it becomes too mechanical rather than exploring the subtle aspects of the breath. Also incorporating basic elements of Pranayama, the class will be challenging and for those with years of experience.」
Prana is important in the practice,我們該explore more space to let breath in,help lengthen the spine,這節課的進行方式就是先練習Basic warm up,然後是Pranayama,最後是Primary Series的部分動作練習that’s all for today,重點是expend the inner side。
Alex要我們注意每次吸氣時Uddiyana Bandha收腹、Mula Bandha提會陰uplift with that,吸氣時stomach in,因此只有胸腔漲大。
回到坐姿,要感覺臀部非常的沉重,如果能雙盤最好,可以draw energy up and move in,吸氣時肋骨收進去,create inner space, not physical,他說有時要放棄身體的努力quiet difficult in beginning。
Pranayama exercise is real, not sleep,事實上quiet strong,”It’s important attachment with body.”他說不要因此成為slave,因為我們not able to control it,而是要去認清that’s my body, keep the steady center, being witness what happen。
他說吸氣時只要想著Mula Bandha就好,stomach relax but keep still,重要的不是physical part,而是內再的感覺。
Alex說呼吸法It’s beautiful practice。
Alex說Yogi不是要練到能跳到屋頂上,我們要welcome, create space inside,所以inhalation可以幫助我們,而不是去prevent,那會使我們身體更僵硬,他說呼吸法能purify our digestive system, “Try to always us the inhalation to be a key to open the door. Stop thinking too much. Switch off, bring awareness in. Don’t do anything, you can’t fix it. Exploring the something in.”

P639 Demystifying Ashtanga Yoga/Alex (120min)
這節兩小時課是Lecture and Demonstration,Intermediate/Advanced Workshop,課程內容敘述是「This is an evening to examine the very principles of this practice as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and the legendary T. Krishnamacharya. First there will be a brief talk on the plurality of Yoga within the Indian tradition, then a 45-min demonstration and a Q&A session to end.」
I don’t want bore you too much.”
Alex說現在世界上有so many style of yoga, like salad bar,他說yoga is a incredible practice,像是science, philosophy, religion,但目的都是bring union, let us know who we really are,他說don’t need to perform perfect pose,反而是學習Sanskrit比asana更重要。”More yoga practice can waken you, like home coming.” ”Not get out to require, but find it inside.”他說yoga is always within us. “You can’t loss yourself.” “Our education, family, culture, society you lives in, when they are really in hominy, you will feel it.”
Alex說Pattabhi Jois曾說Ashtanga的意思是8 limbs,大家都知道是yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, kharana, khyana, samadhi,所以就該知道asana is just the one,因此這兩者聽起來似乎有點矛盾,他曾問過Pattabhi Jois,大師的回答是yoga is ONE,asana is to help you to find yoga really is,自然就回連結到other limbs,然後我們就會come to more understand other limbs,”depend on your practice.”他說我們要surrender to God,也因為每個人都想climb highest peak, asana is only step to there. “It’s interesting to know where we come from.”
Alex說Sri Tirumalai Krishnamachary有幾位famous students, include Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, B.K.S.
Alex認為energy in Ashtanga yoga is beautiful,卻突然說”What I said is not important anyway.” Ashtanga yoga inspire more yoga style now,包括Anusara, Yin, Shive Rea, Hot, OM, Jivamukti等派別,”The beauty of yoga is long practice.”他說有些人只學到一點點,就開始share what they had,因此more and more want to know about yoga,但因為有些人know only a little, can’t continue. ”But that’s ok, take some time. You deserve the best, you want the best.”
他說他因為dancing and boxing身上有很多injury,因此他剛開始學yoga時身體很僵硬,而西方人usually want to learn too soon, want everything at once,所以會造成injury,”It’s important to take it slowly.”他說asana不是拿來炫耀的,而是how we draw our awareness in, keep center yourself。
Demo, “If you bore, you welcome to leave.” Sorry to take my shirt in front.”
三次拜日A,一次拜日B,Vasisthasana(難度係數18) 抓腳指踢高開始,Visvamitrasana(難度係數20),我發現他換邊時把移動的腳跟踩在地板支撐的腳趾正前方,Vinyasa開始坐姿背腳Eka Pada Sirsasana(難度係數15),然後躺下Bhairavasana(難度係數16),滾背起chakorasana(難度係數20),可以看到他背腳的膝蓋後側完全吻合肩膀外側、沒有縫隙。
坐姿先半盤,膝蓋先彎、伸直、背腳的Side Plank,Kala Bhairavasana(難度係數19),站起Durvasasana(難度係數21)。
Salamba Sirsasana I頭倒立,空中雙盤Urdhva Padmasana in Sirsasana,接雙盤Crow,Urdhva Kukkutasana(難度係數18),回Salamba Sirsasana I。
半盤完全魚王式Paripurna Matsyendrasana(難度係數38),他突然說”It’s good to balance both sides.”
Salamba Sirsasana I頭倒立,直接成Vrschikasana I蠍子式(難度係數32),直接往後接Dwi Pada Viparita Dandasana兩腳伸直併攏(難度係數24),上週Patrick才幫Stephen完成的動作,頭離地、臉看地板,輪流單腳舉高Eka Pada Viparita Dandasana I(難度係數26),直接跳回Salamba Sirsasana I頭倒立接Vinyasa。
再一次站姿拜日A,接兩手撐地鴿王式Rajakapotasana(難度係數38),腳底踩後腦。
Do it again, then I will tell you where?” It’s amazing. It’s beautiful.”
Which is harder? Asana or Sanskrit? Alex說兩者並不相同,以Asana來說,learn how to do it, not struggle, hold it not to push to do the pose,他強調surrendering,不要用ambition hold the pose。
他說通常去Mysore練習的前兩個星期都只能練習Sun Solution,然後慢慢再加上Standing poses,一個月後開始練習一些primary series裏的動作,基本上只有一個老師指導,所以many students do different thing, according to how open they are,每個人自己的狀況是很重要的,the goal is not further,課堂上take silence,只有老師指導或叫罵scream的聲音(啊~)Mysore之後都是LED class,跟著老師的口令練習。
有位同學問Alex學習瑜珈多久了,他說他從1995年到Mysore開始練習,in the beginning, ambition want to do everything at once,四個月後才開始練習primary series,他說老師要求slow me down,即使他已經可以練到第三級的動作,還是得放慢學習的速度,他說他當時很想退前,因為每個人到印度去都想趕快學到很多的東西,但Pattabhi Jois要他surrender more, slow, step by step, Alex說很多人都想perfrom asana, not wrong with that,但瑜珈最重要的是how we increase the inner space,他說有人需要12年來了解這個道理,就像他一樣。
他說not do what our ego want to do, “You want get your money worth. You want your money get return.” 這是一般人普遍的心態,尤其no body will remember your name。但他說hardest part is to surrender,他說samadhi就是要把all desire and ambition gone。 It’s the best yoga comes out.”
有位男同學問到學習瑜珈有沒有年齡的限制,Alex說這是個dedicate question,因為他看到Mysore有七十多歲的人能作第二級動作,但他說重點是not what you do, but how you do it. 重要的是energy is awaken,所以只要slow and consistently practice it, “You can teach your grandma” Alex強調the most beautiful practice is the sun salutation, 就可以see the changes, “that’s enough.” 他說所有的動作我們都可以learn modification in the beginning, therefore everyone can do it.而Ashtanga的好處就是certain sequence to align by,而Asana一共有八萬四千多種,很多都來自於學習species in the world,從sun salutation到standing poses to strong your legs然後再到seated poses,其中的Vinyasa意義就是replacement, re-center the body,就好像wipe clean in between,Vamana Rishi大師曾說”Oh Yogi, Do Not Practice Asana Without Vinyasa.”
Nothing wrong with trying.”
他建議一班同學都能練習basic pranayama,有一些certain way to practice it.
How yoga change your life?” Alex說他比較不易怒、也比較softer, appreciate everything,”The joy to practice yoga is releasing crazy thing, can experience beautiful world, those great gifts we forgotten.” “Taste the freedom and bless that effort, not need to wait for it happen. Just peel the layer off.” Ujjayi is like focusing the breath inside(除了Savasana不用Ujjayi),”Don’t bring tension to tension.”

P633 Mysore/Alex (150min)
她說今天人很多 “Because everybody want to see Alex.”

P632 Power 1/Alex (60min)
Mantra(Evocation to the sage Patanjali?)

P631 Hatha 1/Alex (60min)
Evocation to the sage Patanjali:
OM
YOGENA CHITTASYA PADENA VACHAM
MALAM SHARIRASYA CHA VAIDYAKENA
YOPAKAROTAN PRAVARNM MUNEENAM
PATANJALIM PRANJALI RANATOSMI
(I bow to the sage Patanjali, who cured the imperfections of the mind through yoga
the imperfections of speech through grammar and the imperfections of the body through medicine)
OM
VANDE GURUNAM CARANARAVINDE
SANDARSITA SVATMA SUKHAVA BODHE
NIH SREYASE JANGALIKAYAMANE
SAMSARA HALAHALA MOHASANTYAI
ABAHU PURUSAKARAM
SANKHACAKRASI DHARINAM
SAHASRA SIRASAM SVETAM
PRANAMAMI PATANJALIM
OM
(pray to the Lotus feet of the Supreme Guru who teaches the good knowledge, showing the way to knowing the selfawakening great happiness; who is the doctor of the jungle, able to remove the poison of the ignorance of conditioned existence.
To Patanjali, an incarnation of Adisesa, white in color with 1000 radiant heads (in his form as the divine serpent, Ananta), human in form below the shoulders holding a sword (discrimination), a wheel of fire (discus of light, representing infinite time), and a conch (Divine sound) - to him, I prostrate.)
Evocation to the sage Patanjali:
OM
YOGENA CHITTASYA PADENA VACHAM
MALAM SHARIRASYA CHA VAIDYAKENA
YOPAKAROTAN PRAVARNM MUNEENAM
PATANJALIM PRANJALI RANATOSMI
(I bow to the sage Patanjali, who cured the imperfections of the mind through yoga
the imperfections of speech through grammar and the imperfections of the body through medicine)
